At Home with Amalie Gassmann
Born in San Francisco, raised in Paris, having lived in New York and Los Angeles, and now settled in London: Amalie Gassmann has called many places home. Today, her house reflects this very journey. As a filmmaker, photographer, and model, she has a keen eye for light, perspective, and atmosphere. This same vision shapes her interior design: every room appears meticulously staged while retaining an effortless sense of ease.

ACT I: THE ROOTS

Objects full of stories

Stepping into Amalie’s home is like embarking on a journey through her story. Amid clean lines and carefully selected design pieces, personal mementos add depth and character to the interiors. Most meaningful are the keepsakes from her Japanese grandmother, who lived to the remarkable age of 101. They keep her heritage alive and continue to inspire her every day.

'It all felt incredibly intuitive – I somehow just slipped into writing. And I've always loved visual composition and storytelling.'

Homebody

Despite her busy schedule, Amalie considers herself a true 'homebody'. Her home is her creative sanctuary – a safe haven where she can recharge and find inspiration. The interiors are intentionally understated, brought to life by distinctive statement pieces.

'In art, everything has a kind of backstory, a reason, and a process.'

Research Mode: Couch

'I love working from the couch.' It’s where books are read, films are analysed, and initial ideas take shape. Comfort is just as important as a calm, soothing environment.

Space to Focus

Amalie’s home also includes a classic workspace. The home office is functional and pared-back, blending seamlessly into the apartment’s overall aesthetic.

Minimal, but never empty!

ACT II: THE STAGE

Design with Intention

Amalie shapes her home through subtle choices: a specific texture, a pop of colour, an object placed in just the right spot. The result is a look that feels modern and clean, yet subtly punctuated by details that add contrast and character.

Getting Dressed is Part of the Process

The wardrobe is far more than just storage. It serves as an open mood board, a source of inspiration, and a creative playground all at once. Colours, materials, and silhouettes are constantly reworked into new looks, much like the individual elements of a film scene.

'I think the best thing about living in London is the freedom you have, that sense of independence. It’s beautiful.'

Freedom that inspires

A Breath of Nature

Time spent sitting in the park, reading, or simply taking a moment to breathe provides Amalie with a counterbalance to the city’s energy. Her house also reflects this longing for nature, with plenty of natural light, organic forms, and airy fabrics that bring warmth and a sense of lightness into the rooms.

ACT III: THE CREATION

Green retreat

Those who love nature as much as Amalie find peace in their own garden. Surrounded by plants and fresh air, it offers a counterpoint to the bustle of shoots and appointments.

Hosting as Inspiration

Amalie loves sharing her sanctuary with friends. For her, hosting is a form of creative expression in itself: designing a tablescape, planning the menu, and staging the evening are all part of her storytelling, just as much as her work as a filmmaker. The people she surrounds herself with continually provide her with new inspiration.

Set the Table

'For me personally, ‘Live Beautiful’ means being as authentic as possible and having a space that reflects that – one that reflects my personality and serves as a safe place for my creativity'

'Simply put, anything that makes me happy and brings me joy is what ‘live beautifully’ means to me.'
